Moving & Handling People 2015 will include a full workshop dedicated to safety and standards around the handling of plus-sized clients. The workshop will be led by Anita Rush, Clinical Nurse Specialist for Equipment in Berkshire. Anita is employed by the Berkshire Partnership made up of seven CCGs and six unitary authorities. In her wide-ranging role she carries out complex manual handling assessments, trains prescribers and is responsible for ensuring the equipment catalogue is optimised for the best and most cost-effective products. She works with the local service provider (NRS) and a wide range of practitioners in the region. She is also a regular user of DLF’s knowledge base for healthcare professionals DLF Data!
Anita’s specialisation is plus-sized clients, having recently co-authored a book with Mary Muir published by National Back Exchange called ‘Moving and Handling of Plus Size People – An Illustrated Guide’ (to find out more about the book contact www.nationalbackexchange.org). ‘There’s so much prejudice,’’ she explained to DLF, ‘’people are often not confident in handling heavier clients. They can refuse to engage claiming people are too heavy to touch; disrespect is a huge issue.’’
Anita has been involved with Moving & Handling People for over ten years in fact she remembers it was her first speaking engagement after graduating! ‘’I’m looking forward to the 2015 event,’’ she continued, ‘’there’s nothing like the positive buzz you get at M&HP. It’s two really good days of learning and networking. There are other conferences but M&HP offers the hands-on workshops and learning and that makes it a different kind of event. M&HP has developed over the years and continues to deal with what’s important today. People have to justify the time away from their main work, but anyone involved in patient handling from nurses to engineers should consider attending!’’
